After shelving the WLR Deluxe, Carti entered his most mysterious era. He announced Narcissist for September 13, 2021, but it never dropped due to sample clearance issues and its similarities to Future’s sound. Fans speculated the album might be called Mollyworld after a fit pic caption, but Narcissist was the final name.
- Early 2021Whole Lotta Red (Deluxe) gets shelved.
- March 10, 2021Just three months after WLR, Carti hints on Instagram at wanting to drop a new project soon.
- May, 2021Carti starts using WLR voice in a lower tone (e.g. "all the funds")
- July 7, 2021Carti goes to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to work on Donda, Ye encourages carti to evolve his aesthetic and sound, which leads Carti to experimenting with deeper, more experimental sounds (which would eventually become the modern deep voice and formant voice)
- July-August, 2021Ye is involved in the Narcissist rollout, and connects Carti with people such as Demna, and other artists working on Donda.
