Why Does Playboi Carti Have So Many Unreleased Songs?

Four numbered versions of Whole Lotta Red, years between albums, and a tracker far bigger than the discography — the reasons, with the numbers.

The short answer: Because he records far more than he releases, rebuilds albums before they come out, and leaves years between them — while snippets and leaks keep the songs that did not make it in circulation. On unreleased.world that adds up to 1,212 unreleased tracks across 30 projects and 29 eras. The community tracker lists 1,744 unreleased songs and versions — about 4 for every song it lists as released.

That gap is the whole story, and it has a handful of causes. Each one is visible in the tracker itself — the community-maintained list of everything Carti has recorded that fans know about, which unreleased.world syncs every hour.

1. He records far more than he releases

Die Lit came out in 2018 with 19 songs; the tracker's Die Lit era lists 208 songs and versions. The self-titled era before it, Playboi Carti, lists 211. Sessions produce songs by the dozen; an album keeps a few dozen at most. Everything else becomes the vault.

2. He rebuilds albums before they come out

Whole Lotta Red was announced in 2018 and released on Christmas Day 2020, and it changed shape more than once in between. The tracker keeps each stage as its own era — four numbered versions and a deluxe era — and each one has songs of its own:

MUSIC, released in March 2025, went the same way: the tracker files the sessions before it as Narcissist and three versions of MUSIC, and together they run to hundreds of entries.

3. Years pass between albums

The mixtape Playboi Carti came out in 2017, Die Lit in 2018, Whole Lotta Red in 2020 and MUSIC in 2025. More than four years separate the last two, and every one of those years added sessions to the tracker. Long gaps do not mean an artist stopped working; they mean the work piled up somewhere fans could not hear it.

4. Snippets and leaks keep the songs in circulation

Carti previews music in short clips, and leaks have reached fans for years. The tracker lists 232 Carti songs known only from snippets — songs nobody outside the studio has heard in full, but which exist, have names, and are counted. That is a big part of why the vault feels endless: it includes songs you cannot hear yet.

New to the vocabulary? A snippet is a short preview, a leak is a full song that got out, and a grail is a song collectors want most. The glossary covers the rest.

5. He is on other artists' sessions too

The tracker even keeps eras for his sessions on other people's albums — Kanye West's DONDA and VULTURES among them — and features turn up across the eras. The Kanye West unreleased guide covers the other side of those sessions.

Every Playboi Carti era, in order

The community Playboi Carti tracker files 1,696 entries — songs and their alternate versions — into 29 eras, oldest first. Every one of them has its own page on unreleased.world, with the full tracklist and every song ready to play.
