Michael Jackson Unreleased Songs: The Era-by-Era Guide

Outtakes and early versions from Off the Wall to Invincible, his final sessions and the posthumous albums — the Michael Jackson vault, era by era.

Open the Michael Jackson tracker

Michael Jackson recorded far more than he released. Each of his albums from Off the Wall to Invincible was chosen from a much larger set of songs, and what was left over has surfaced slowly over the decades — some of it on official releases, much of it not at all. On unreleased.world his vault holds 283 unreleased tracks across 12 projects and 12 eras, counted live from the catalogue. This guide takes it era by era; to listen, you can open the Michael Jackson tracker on unreleased.world.

Who was Michael Jackson?

Michael Jackson (1958–2009) sang lead in the Jackson 5 at Motown before a solo career that made him one of the best-selling artists in history. His albums for Epic — Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (1995), Blood on the Dance Floor (1997) and Invincible (2001) — include Thriller, widely cited as the best-selling album of all time. Since his death in 2009, his estate and his label have released the posthumous albums Michael (2010) and Xscape (2014), built from recordings he left unreleased.

What the tracker lists

The community tracker lists 1,050 Michael Jackson songs and versions, each filed under the album it was recorded for. Most of them have never been heard: the majority are songs the tracker marks as confirmed or rumoured to exist, with nothing of them out. What you can stream here is the part that has surfaced — demos, early versions and outtakes.

The numbers on this page are read from the catalogue and the community tracker every hour, so they will keep changing as songs surface.

Every Michael Jackson era, in order

The community Michael Jackson tracker files 1,017 entries — songs and their alternate versions — into 12 eras, oldest first. Every one of them has its own page on unreleased.world, with the full tracklist and every song ready to play.

The eras worth knowing

Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad

The three albums he made with Quincy Jones are where the vault begins in earnest. Off The Wall (4 tracks), Thriller (22 tracks) and Bad (24 tracks) each hold outtakes and early versions. The tracker notes that Bad was first conceived as a much longer record and cut to eleven songs, and its grails, listed below, are drawn heavily from the Bad sessions — many of them songs known to exist that have never been heard.

Dangerous and HIStory: the deepest eras

Dangerous (60 tracks) is the largest era on the tracker, which lists 235 entries for it. HIStory: Past, Present, And Future: Book I (16 tracks) follows; by the tracker's count, dozens of songs and ideas were made for it and fifteen were chosen.

Invincible and the final sessions

Invincible (51 tracks) covers the four years from the end of the HIStory World Tour in 1997 to the album in 2001. The tracker then keeps Post-Invincible (25 tracks) and Final sessions (27 tracks) for the recordings of his last years, up to 2009.

The posthumous albums

The last two eras follow the albums released after his death: Michael (30 tracks) (2010) and XSCAPE (18 tracks) (2014).

The Michael Jackson tracker's grails and favourites

Beside the full list, many community trackers keep two short ones: grails — the songs collectors prize most, some of which have never surfaced in full — and a best-of. These are the Michael Jackson tracker's own, in its order and synced every hour, with what has surfaced of each and a link wherever unreleased.world can play it.
