Poppy first confirmed the album was in the works in the winter 2022 print of Revolver Magazine. It was recorded and had been completed some time in 2022 while she was under Republic and Lava Records, but was delayed due to her changing to Sumerian once again. Poppy also confirmed she recorded "well over 40 songs" for Zig and that the album went through several stages.
