Announced in 2017, 'Turbo' was originally intended to be Oliver's debut studio album under Atlantic. Following the success of When I'm Down in 2016, and the surprise virality of Oliver's 'Turbo' gimmick, Atlantic Records took notice of his work and signed him in April 2017, a month before he graduated from CalArts.
