Sessions for Pop 2 began in July 2017, with the bulk of the mixtape recorded over a three-to-four-day period at Alicia Keys’ former studio in New York City. Charli has described the mixtape format as giving her greater artistic freedom, allowing her to avoid the politics and expectations associated with major-label album releases.
