Following the release of her self-titled 2019 album Charli, Charli XCX began working on an ’80s- and Janet Jackson-inspired pop album. She first mentioned the project in an interview with The FADER, describing her plans for a new direction. However, work on the album was relatively short-lived before the COVID-19 lockdowns began and shifted her focus toward how i’m feeling now.
